05 — Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers, organised by topic

Environmental Compliance

Do I need PCB Consent?
Most manufacturing and processing units need Consent to Establish and Consent to Operate from their State Pollution Control Board, though the exact requirement depends on your category and activity.
What happens if consent expires?
Operating without valid consent can expose a unit to penalties, notices, or a stop-operations directive. Renewal should be initiated well before the expiry date.
What records should be maintained?
At minimum: consent orders, hazardous waste manifests, annual returns, and an up-to-date environmental register, retained for the statutory period.

ESG

Does my company need an ESG report?
Formal ESG reporting is currently mandatory mainly for large listed companies in India, but many MSMEs are now asked for ESG data informally by customers, investors, or banks further up their supply chain.
What is BRSR?
The Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report is SEBI's mandated ESG disclosure format for the top listed companies by market capitalisation in India — smaller suppliers are often asked to provide data that feeds into it.
Why are customers asking ESG questions?
Large buyers increasingly need supplier-level ESG data to meet their own reporting and sustainability commitments — so the request is usually being passed down their supply chain, not a one-off.

Carbon Markets

What are carbon credits?
A tradable unit representing one tonne of CO2-equivalent emissions reduced, avoided, or removed through a verified project activity.
How are carbon credits generated?
A project is designed under an approved methodology, validated by an independent auditor, registered with a standard such as Verra or Gold Standard, and then verified periodically before credits are issued.
What projects qualify?
Common examples include renewable energy, energy efficiency, waste recycling, methane capture, and wastewater treatment — eligibility depends on the specific methodology and whether the activity is "additional."

CDP & SBTi

Is CDP mandatory?
Not by law for most companies in India. Most disclosures happen because a customer or investor specifically requests it through CDP's Supply Chain or investor programmes.
What's the difference between Net Zero and SBTi?
Net Zero is the long-term goal (commonly 2050); SBTi sets the validated, near-term (5–10 year) reduction targets that provide a credible path toward it.
Can smaller businesses adopt SBTi?
Yes — SBTi has a streamlined route for smaller and medium-sized enterprises, though a reasonably complete emissions baseline is needed first.
How long does the process take?
A first CDP response typically takes several weeks once data is available; SBTi validation is usually a multi-month process from baseline to submission.
